About the Court
Established in 1963 by an amendment to Article 1817, V.T.C.S., and following authority granted by Article 5, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution, the Thirteenth Court of Appeals is a key pillar of the legal system in Corpus Christi and Edinburg, Texas.
In civil cases, the Thirteenth Court of Appeals has the authority to hear appeals where the judgment exceeds $100, exclusive of costs. This ensures the court's resources are directed towards significant cases where the financial implications are substantial.
Criminal cases also fall within the court's jurisdiction, with the exception of cases involving post-conviction writs of habeas corpus and those where the death penalty has been imposed. These exceptions reflect the specific roles and jurisdictions of different levels within the Texas legal system.
